In Algeria, a 10-year prison sentence was requested for writer Boualem Sansal, detained since November 2024 and accused of undermining state security. French President Emmanuel Macron appealed to Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for a resolution allowing Sansal's release and medical care. Sansal, who defended himself without a lawyer, denied intending to harm Algeria. His French lawyer denounced the secret trial and lack of defense. The case has heightened tensions between France and Algeria, already strained after Macron's recognition of a Moroccan plan for Western Sahara.
